Dammit, we could have prevented this whole thing.

I wish that was real.

Very much needed. When I was younger and dumber I occasionally would go to Golden Corral (mostly because family wanted to meet there).  That all ended when I saw a guy go directly from the urinal to the meat counter with no stop at the sink in between.  Nope, done, no more.

Right when Corona started going down and they were telling everyone to wash their hands, and implementing social distancing and all that, I was in the stall at work doing my business, and I saw/heard someone come in, use the urinal, and leave. Gross during normal times, but now deadly!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen doctors and dentists come in, use the stall , and leave after a token splash at the sink or none at all. I stopped shaking hands without sanitizer before all this went down.

I’ve come to the conclusion that, for the most part, people are filthy animals.

Hand washing has always been a problem in medical settings. It’s why there are now hand sanitizer dispensers in seemingly every room. We can’t get doctors to take a minute or two to was their hands, but apparently it’s easier to get them to take 30 seconds to rub on some P urel, especially if it’s right there, even if it’s not as good as a proper hand wash .

True fact.

Purell should be an adjunct, not a replacement for hand washing, as too many people consider it.  First thing my doctor does when she enters the room is wash her hands.  My mom had terribly chapped hands for years because of clinic.  It’s not hard, people!

Apparently it is to hard though. I mean I’m sure we could focus on training, and even enforcement, but those efforts haven’t been particularly successful in the past, while the hand-sanitizer push has led to durable improvement (though things still aren’t as good as we’d like).

Hm, now you’ve got me thinking about how one would go about building such an alert system ( without using cameras, of course) .

Maybe have a switch attached to the faucet... it wouldn’t verify that they really washed their hands, but at least prove that the water was turned on. And then there’s the matter of a door switch, but it would have to be activated only by exiting traffic.. . make it part of the handle? T he faucet switch could override t he door switch for a brief time (15-20 seconds? enough to dry hands anyway ) to prevent the alarm from sounding ...

I dunno, somebody’s bound to take a minute to fix their tie, comb their hair, or something after washing up, so that might not be enough time. But lengthening the override to 3, 4, 5 minutes could defeat the purpose altogether...

You’d have to have a bathroom monitor. You know, like a mom, who says, “Let me feel your hands” to make sure you washed them. When I was a kid, I remember trying to fake my mom out by getting my hands wet and then trying to get the soap wet. I realized that I was basically washing my hands already, so I gave up.

T hat’s kind of the direction I was going in with the faucet switch. In order to override t he alarm, t hey’d still at least have to touch the faucet...

Ah! I got it: soap dispenser switch! You can’t override the door without hitting the lever that drop s a glob of soap in your hand. Gotta rinse that glob off, right?

By George, I think you’ve got it!

No need for a faucet switch anymore! Nor a towel dispenser/blow dryer switch, for that matter . The soap will do. Just gotta figure out the timing b etween t he soap and door switches, and leave enough extra time for people to powder their nose or whatever ...

But what’s to keep me from putting a piece of paper towel in my hand, squirting the soap into that to trigger the system, then throwing the soapy towel in the trash? Shouldn’t the soap switch be coupled with the faucet switch?

Yeah, we could have more switches... or make sure that there are no paper towels, just blow-dryers. Someone could still do what you said with toilet paper, but I think that’s getting pretty close to a level of creativity and effort that c ould make actual hand-washing the easier way out.

have you heard of studies done on doctors ties?

You’re better off sticking your hand in sewage.
